About HEROES, Inc.®

HEROES, Inc. ® was founded in 1964 by a group of Metropolitan Washington businessmen with the singular goal of assisting the widows and children of law enforcement officers and firefighters who give their lives in the line of duty. Our organization consists of one hundred members representing the business, professional and spiritual leadership of the greater Metropolitan Washington area. Our entire program is conducted by our membership on a volunteer basis. We have no administrative costs or paid employees.

Our only fundraising activity is the HEROES, Inc. ® Golf Tournament which is held annually. The organization of this tournament is carried on by the HEROES Golf Committee which consists primarily of retired law enforcement officers and firefighters who volunteer their time and have made this tournament one of the most successful of its kind on the East Coast. The benefits from this annual event go directly to the parent organization’s Scholarship Program.

At this time we have 10 young men and women attending colleges and universities throughout the United States and we are committed in the years to come to fifty-two (52) dependents of the one hundred eighty-two (182) HEROES whose names now appear on our Honor Roll. Our assistance is made in the form of full scholarships which include tuition, room and board, books, supplies and many other incidental costs which may be incurred. Our scholarship recipients are attending or have attended colleges, universities and special trade schools. We make no distinction as to the type of schooling or course of study which may be desired. Our only purpose is to see that the young people are able to pursue the dreams and hopes dreamed for them by their deceased parents.

Of the one hundred eighty-two (182) HEROES whose names appear on our honor roll, one hundred thirty (130) left behind spouses. Two hundred twenty-four (224) children were left behind by these officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Our organization is non-profit and is incorporated in the District of Columbia under Charitable Certificate No. 6-07-398 and our jurisdiction includes the District of Columbia, the adjoining Maryland counties of Montgomery and Prince George’s, Virginia counties of Arlington and Fairfax and the cities of Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax. HEROES, Inc. ® participates in the United Way (#8360), the Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area (designated number 81118) and the Combined Virginia Campaign designated (#8002).
